SALT LAKE CITY — Four candidates will vie for outgoing Democratic Sen. Scott McCoy’s District 2 seat at a special delegate meeting Saturday.

Arlyn Bradshaw, Ben McAdams, Brian Moss and Mark Towner will compete for the final year of McCoy’s term.

Bradshaw is a former executive director for the state Democrats and currently works for Salt Lake County Council Chairman Joe Hatch.

McAdams is a senior adviser for Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, and has practiced law in Salt Lake City and New York.

Moss, who’s father Frank Moss was a one-time U.S. senator for Utah, mounted an unsuccessful challenge in 1988 of the man who unseated his father, GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch.

Towner was active for many years in the Salt Lake County Republican Party.

Candidates must garner 60 percent or more of the vote to win the seat on a single ballot at the meeting. If no candidate hits the 60 percent mark on the first ballot, the two highest vote-getters square off in a second round of voting which only requires a simple majority for victory.

McCoy leaves as the only openly gay senator in the Legislature. A lawyer, he resigned to devote more time to his legal career.
