Original Article: Republicans pick 3 to replace Salt Lake County councilman

SANDY — Republican Party delegates from Salt Lake Council District 5 have nominated a cop, a pilot and a lawyer as possible replacements for councilman Jeff Allen, who resigned three weeks ago.

Steve DeBry, a captain with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, won the first round of balloting at a special nominating convention held Saturday morning in Sandy. Troy Walker, a commercial pilot, was nominated on the second round of voting and Murray attorney Greg Hawkins won on the third ballot.

The law requires that each nominee must receive 60 percent of the ballot. Two rounds of voting were required to select the final three nominees from a list of seven potential candidates.

Party officials will now submit the three names to the County Council, which has 45 days to chose one of the three nominees to complete the final year of Allen’s term. The post will be up for election next November.

Thomas Wright, the precinct chair, said he would have preferred to send just one nominee forward, but said the party officials would follow the rules.

“We don’t like the state law, but we are going to abide by it,” he said.

As the winner of the first round of voting, DeBry will be identified as the party’s top choice to replace Allen, Wright said.
