Original Article: Father, son crash ultralight craft in Zion Park

ZION NATIONAL PARK — A father and son are spending the night in Zion National Park after crash landing their ultralight aircraft in the park.

They crashed around 6:15 p.m., said park ranger Therese Picard. Their names or home towns aren’t available for release.

The father’s ankle and arm were broken in the crash, and the son sustained minor injuries, Picard said.

Because of waning daylight and the area’s remoteness — the vicinity of the North Fork trailhead near Kolob Terrace Road — the father and son couldn’t be extracted Saturday.

However, park medics reached them and are spending the night with them in the backcountry.

Picard said a rescue helicopter from Grand Canyon National Park is scheduled to pick up the father and son at daylight Sunday.
