Original Article: Bear Lake tests negative for quagga mussels

LOGAN — Bear Lake has tested negative for invasive quagga mussels.

Eight quagga mussel traps that had been in the lake since April were pulled from Bear Lake Wednesday.

Scott Tolentino, fisheries manager with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, says each of the traps came up clean.

This is the second year the Division of Wildlife Resources has conducted testing in the northern Utah lake.

In Utah, boat owners who have been in contaminated water must assert that they’ve cleaned, drained and dried their vessels or have had their hulls blasted with 140-degree water by professionals. Violators can be fined $5,000 fine and sentenced to up to six months in jail.
