An official in Argentina's southern Tierra del Fuego province performed the country's, and Latin America's first same-sex marriage earlier today, the AP reports:
"Provincial spokesman Eduardo Porter says the wedding between Jose Maria Di Bello and Alex Freyre took place at the civil registry in Ushuaia.
Their marriage plans in Buenos Aires earlier this month were thwarted when city officials refused to marry them because of conflicting rulings.
An official representing the federal government's antidiscrimination agency attended the wedding. Claudio Morgado called Monday's marriage 'historic.'
Argentina's Constitution is silent on whether marriage must be between a man and a woman, effectively leaving the matter to state and city officials."

Jose Maria Di Bello and his partner Alex Freyre, the gay Argentine couple whose would-be historic marriage was blocked by a judge last week, want the mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri, fined for failing to marry them:
"The couple requested that the court set a fine on Macri for each of the days until they are allowed to wed. On Monday, Freyre and Di Bello went to a Civil Registry in the City neighbourhood of Barrio Norte, after Judge Seijas' court ruled that the law barring same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.
Another court ordered the suspension of the wedding only days ahead of the wedding, claiming the issue fell under Federal Jurisdiction. However, Seijas' dismissed such claims and asked the Mayor to confirm her ruling and request the Civil Registry to marry the couple.
Macri refrained to do so, forcing the couple to wait for a decision of the Supreme Court in the matter."

UPDATED: No sooner had I posted about the upcoming wedding, that this bad, yet not surprising news rounded the bend.
An Argentine judge has overturned the ruling that would have allowed the nation's first same-sex marriage: "The official court Web site says national judge Marta Gomez Alsina ordered the wedding blocked until the issue can be resolved by the Supreme Court.
Jose Maria Di Bello and his partner Alex Freyre have been planning to wed on Tuesday, based on another judge's ruling. Their attorney says they'll still try to go ahead with the ceremony because they weren't told of Monday's ruling.
Attorney Maria Rachid argues that the new ruling should not overturn the original decision to let them wed.

Alex Freyre (left) told the UK Observer:
"This marriage is bigger than José María and I. It is a victory for all who face prejudice and discrimination across
Latin America and the Caribbean. It is proof that at last the grip of
the Catholic church is slipping across Latin America, the system that
has kept gay communities silent and fearful is crumbling. What is
happening on Tuesday is a strike against those attitudes that have
repressed sexual rights across this continent for too long."

A judge in Argentina has reportedly ruled that Jose Maria Di Bello and Alex Freyre can marry, Reuters reports:
"An Argentine judge has granted a homosexual couple permission to get married, setting a precedent that could pave the way for the Catholic country to become the first in Latin America to allow same-sex marriage.
This week's ruling by Judge Gabriela Seijas in Buenos Aires, which became the region's first city to approve civil unions between same sex couples in 2002, may increase pressure on lawmakers to debate a gay marriage bill currently deadlocked in Congress. 'The law should treat everyone with the same respect according to their singularities, without the need to understand or regulate them,' Seijas said in her ruling, which could still be overturned by city authorities.
The couple, Alex Freyre and Jose Maria Di Bello, said in a statement posted on a gay rights Internet site that the decision would allow them to become 'the first gay couple in Latin America to get the right to marry.'"

Argentina considers same-sex marriage: "'We can't expect social equality if the state is legitimizing
inequality,' said Maria Rachid, president of Argentina's Gay, Lesbian,

same-sex marriage, and they believe they have enough votes in committee
